Funding Crisis 20th May 2008

Funding cuts could leave thousands of older people in Leicestershire and Rutland without access to basic support.  Age Concern Leicester Shire & Rutland's' independent and trusted Information & Advice services are in danger of disappearing unless further funding is found.

Last year the Information & Advice team based at Lansdowne House dealt with over 5300 enquiries, they helped with nearly 700 claims for extra allowances and benefits and raised over £1,700,000 in extra income for older people across the counties.

Research has shown that the Information & Advice team provide a lifeline for those who use them.  Claiming the money they are entitled to has given the vast majority more money for essentials such as food, fuel and clothes, and means they can continue to live independently with a better quality of life.

Many people reported a greater sense of wellbeing and reduced levels of anxiety, thanks to reduced money worries and a feeling they have someone on their side to help, i.e. their Age Concern Advisor.

Sadly one post has already been lost and a further two posts are under threat this year.  Tony Donovan, Executive Director said "The Information & Advice team provide such help, it is the most effective way of assisting older people to claim the money they are entitled.  It's independent, free and confidential and I am saddened that the service is under such threat at a time when thousands of pounds is sitting unclaimed."
