Mayor and Mayoress walk for Age Concern Leicester Shire & Rutland 6th June 2008
The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Stephen Campbell, and the Mayoress, Councillor Brenda Seaton, are supporting Age Concern Leicester Shire & Rutland this year by attending the charity's Watermead Country Park Walk.
This is one of four sponsored walks that take place on Sunday 29 June 2008.
The Mayor said "I am delighted to support Age Concern during my year of office. Age comes to all of us and maintaining healthy lifestyles and supporting those less able to do so should be a concern for all of us. The ambulance used in our local community to assist frail older people to get to day centres and enjoy trips out is badly in need of replacement and I will be encouraging the people of Charnwood to support me in raising funds for this appeal."
The main purposes of all the walks are to: -
- Raise much needed money to assist Age Concern with meeting the purchase cost of a new ambulance to transport frail older people to day centres. The cost is £35,000. The vehicles purchased are specifically designed to meet the needs of people who have very little mobility and who can be a little confused.
- Highlight the Active for Life Campaign - raising awareness that in order to stay healthy and well, a moderate amount of exercise should be taken each week.
Commenting, the Executive Director of Age Concern Leicestershire and Rutland, Mr Anthony Donovan, said, "The walks are all of a modest distance between 2½ miles and 5 miles, in order to encourage everyone to join in. We are very grateful to the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood for their invaluable support this year. A new ambulance is desperately needed and will make a real difference to the lives of many local older people whose mobility is greatly restricted and might otherwise not be able to get out at all."
This year the walks have been arranged at:
- Birstall - Watermead Country Park Walk - meet at either St James Centre, School Lane, Birstall at 10.30am or Meadow Lane Car Park at 11.00am
