Respite service

This project is funded by Leicestershire County Council Social Services, and is available in:
Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Blaby, Lutterworth, Charwood, Oadby, Wigston and Hinckley.

The service provides breaks for the carers of people with dementia between 8.00am and 11.00pm, 7 days per week. A maximum of 8 hours respite per week can be provided depending on assessed need. The service is provided in the client's own home and there is no charge to carers or clients. Referrals to the service can be made through Community Mental Health teams.

Caring for someone with dementia is stressful and demanding with the sufferer often requiring supervision 24 hours a day. In addition friends often find the disease difficult to cope with and stop visiting. Combined with the loss of social contact outside the home this leads to carers becoming increasingly isolated. The respite service allows carers a break and enables them to maintain social activities and friendships.

Mrs J who is a carer said

"I find the regular break allows me to recharge my batteries and I continue to be able to attend my art classes each week, which I really enjoy. Knowing that my husband is being looked after allows me to enjoy the break and gives me space to be me for some of the time."

The service continues to grow and is currently providing in excess of 250 hours respite each week.
